Cigar Humidor Fundamentals: Creating the Perfect Environment

Humidity is the most critical factor. Cigars require 65-72% relative humidity to maintain proper moisture content. Too dry, and cigars become brittle and burn too quickly. Too humid, and they become difficult to light and may develop mold.

Spanish cedar is the traditional choice for humidor lining because it naturally regulates humidity, repels tobacco beetles, and imparts subtle flavors that complement tobacco. The wood's natural oils help maintain consistent moisture levels while protecting your collection.

Temperature should remain stable between 65-70°F (18-21°C). Fluctuations can cause expansion and contraction that damages cigar wrappers and affects burn quality. Avoid placing humidors near heat sources, air conditioning vents, or windows with direct sunlight.

Air circulation is important but should be controlled. Too much airflow dries out cigars, while stagnant air can lead to uneven humidity distribution. Modern humidification systems use fans or passive circulation to maintain even conditions throughout the storage space.

Organization matters too. Rotate your stock regularly, placing newer acquisitions at the bottom and moving older cigars to the top for easier access. This ensures even aging and prevents some cigars from being forgotten.
